More Than a Feeling

It was like I had my own little theme song playing for me as I walked on to BYU's campus for the first time as an official student:

"I woke up this morning and the sun was gone,
Turned on some music to start my day
I lost myself in a familiar song
I closed my eyes and I slipped away
It's more than a feeling, when I hear that old song they used to play (more than a feeling)
I begin dreaming (more than a feeling)"

How often I have prayed for this opportunity and I'm living in it now!  No one around me realizes how long I've dreamed of this day.  To them, I'm just another student with headphones, walking to class with a cheesy grin on my face.  But for me I'm having a party inside as I'm living "the dream" and reminiscing this old Boston beat I used to play every day in college.

So much more than a feeling!  I felt like I was on cloud nine, and I still feel like It can't be happening.

I'm taking two classes, a religion one and anthropology.  I must say that anthropology is the perfect follow-up from having my experiences at the United Nations in March.  I desire greater understanding of my brothers and sisters around the world and in my own little circle.  It's amazing how we can understand ourselves so much more when we truly seek to understand others.  I have so much to learn, so very much.  In this class, I've already had to read almost 100 pages and trying to absorb everything has been a challenge to say the least.  I feel like that person trying to follow pop tart instructions and the vertical concept is thrown at them. "Uhhh uhh... poof!" My brain explodes!

This will be fun though, I'm excited to learn, to expand, and grow.  I can already see how this will be physically exhausting.  But one foot in front of the other and lots of prayers... I'm on my way.

"Don't Look Back"
by, Boston

Don't look back
A new day is breakin'
It's been too long since I felt this way
I don't mind where I get taken
The road is callin'
Today is the day

I can see
It took so long to realize
I'm much too strong
Not to comprimise
Now I see what I am is holding me down
I'll turn it around

I finally see the dawn arrivin'
I see beyond the road I'm drivin'
Far away and left behind

It's a new horizon and I'm awakin' now
Oh I see myself in a brand new way
The sun is shinin'
the clouds are breakin'
'Canse I can't lose now, there's no game to play

I can tell
There's no more time left to criticize
I've seen what I could not recognize
Everthing in my life was leading me on
but I can be strong

I finally see the dawn arrivin'
I see beyond the road I'm drivin'
Far away and left behind

Soulful Writing

This past Sunday, I had something I was making which required the help of the other young women leaders and the girls.  As a result, I had the opportunity of spending the late afternoon and evening going into several homes and visiting with many wonderful sisters.

One of the leaders I visited with has a darling blond-haired 8-yr-old daughter, Lily. She answered the door and cheerfully invited me in.  While Lily called for her mom, she excitedly told me how she was in the middle of writing a story. I could see the computer screen and a paragraph of words already typed. I responded with how wonderful it was to see someone as young as her already so passionate about something.
My friend, Heidi, walked in and said, "Lily's excited because her dad is writing a screen play."
"Yeah!" Lily's face lit up and asked, "You wanna see it?"
"Sure, I'd love too!" I said.
She scurried out of the room and skipped back with a thick stack of pages bound together with a couple of office clips.
Heidi invited me to sit down.
"Wow. this is evidence of a lot of hard work," I said, holding the stack of papers.
I asked Heidi, "Do you enjoy writing too?"
"Yes," she said, "I actually blogged for a long time, especially when we were living in New York.  I discovered a company that publishes blogs into books." She pulled out a couple of thick heavy books off her shelf and showed them to me.
"How awesome is that!" I said, turning through the pages. "What a treasure!"
I told her how I blogged for several years and then quit.  But I started up again this year.
"Really?" She said with interest, "What do you blog about?"
"Things from my heart, meaningful experiences, and testimony," I replied.
"Oh, soulful writing!" she said, "That's my favorite kind!"
"Soulful writing?" I asked.  "I really like the sound of that.  It's a good description." I told her as I continued flipping through her book.
"You're going back to school, correct?" she inquired. "What are you going into?"
"Communications" I said.  "I asked the counselor which degree I would need to get if I want to go into writing and public speaking and that's the one he suggested."
"That's excellent! What a perfect fit for you!" She said encouragingly. "You know something, I've been thinking of you and just told my husband the other day how you intrigue me and how I want to know your story."
I laughed in disbelief, "Serious? My story?"
"Yes," she said, sincerely.

Well, what was supposed to be a short 3-min visit turned into us talking back and forth and sharing testimony for over an hour.  She gave me a list of some awesome resources and told me that I reminded her of her mom.  I've met her mom before and was humbled by such a comparison. "Well, maybe someday I will be like that," I said.  We concluded that our conversations could go on for hours more and that we needed to just hang out together sometime.  It was a wonderful visit!

I kept thinking about the words, "soulful writing."  I really like the sound of that.  My mother-in-law taught English for 20 years and is an author.  She's published a couple of books and has written for the Friend Magazine on a number of occasions.  (She goes by her maiden name when she writes.)  I would call her style, "fictional writing."  My daughter loves to write fictional stories too and I could easily see her being a published author someday.  I'm not a fictional writer and I don't know if I've ever imagined myself publishing anything.  But I really like the sound of being a "soulful writer." There's something that satisfies me when I can find the perfect words to express what's in my heart... it helps me to heal.  In fact, the title page of my old blog was called, "That Which Heals Me"

My earliest recollection of writing for healing was when I was 9 years old;  I had a pet tree frog named Kermie.  I loved how he fit perfectly in my palm and I carried him everywhere.  I could feel his wet little body snug between my fingers and felt confident he wouldn't get away.  One day, I ran across the lawn to my friend and didn't bother checking to see if my pet remained in my hand because I could still feel his cool little belly.  I looked down after a minute and to my horror realized he was gone!  I frantically searched everywhere in the green grass for him but the color of the blades matched that of my frog exactly.... it was no use.  I was terribly upset, I loved that little frog so much!   I ran in the house crying and locked myself in the bathroom.  I sobbed uncontrollably for nearly an hour. I left the locked room for only a minute to grab some lined paper and a pencil. With tear drops blurring the ink of blue-printed lines, I began to write my very first poem:

Frogs
By, Alicia Manwill - age 9

Frogs are cute, frogs are green,
Frogs will jump on anything.
I had one once, but now he's gone.
He's probly somewhere on the lawn,
Or maybe somewhere in the leaves,
Or maybe somewhere in the trees,
Oh, will someone find him please!

It was true "soulful writing," complete with tear stains on the paper and everything.  I can't help but laugh out-loud every time I think of this poem now.  Even as I type it here, I am laughing.  But as ridiculous as it is, it came from my 9-year-old heart, and somehow it helped me heal.

It's the same for me today... I don't expect people to read the things I write, I just do it when I have a lot on my heart and need a place to put my words.   I like using a blog because I feel that I write with a little more effort knowing there's a possibility of an audience.  Having someone listen inspires creativity and that's true for everyone.

I'll continue to write from my soul, even if no one is listening... because it heals me.  But maybe, just maybe, in the process, it might help heal someone else too.

The Secret to Life

"I wanted to tell you, that song 'Major Tom'...
That song is about courage and going into the unknown. It's a cool song."
- Cheryl Melhoff (The Secret Life of Walter Mitty)

Last night, we watched it again. This makes it the the third time we've watched this movie as family and I'm pretty sure it won't be our last.  Every once in a while a show comes along that strikes so many chords in me, I can almost hear my heart sing in tune. This is how I feel about Mitty.  I loved it the first time I saw it.  To me, everything about this movie is absolutely genius! It captures the magic of discovery; of dreams, of true beauty, of courage, of relationships, and of course... life.

Life's motto is powerful, it's all about vision, about perceiving with new eyes and a new heart.
“To see the world, things dangerous to come,
to see behind walls, draw closer, to find each other, and feel
- that is the purpose of life.”
I love that!  It's the courage to step outside of our own little sphere and see the bigger picture, to explore the souls of others, to take a leap of faith, to seek understanding, and make lasting connections.

One of my favorite scenes in this movie is when Walter is faced with the decision to jump on board of the departing helicopter. He has only a few seconds to make the pivotal move. His mind reflects on Cheryl, he can feel her faith in him like a surge of energy that puts his whole body into motion. Her mere influence instantly gives him courage to run for it and to grab hold of the opportunity that awaits him. Once aboard the helicopter, Walter knows that there is no turning back.

As the story unfolds we continue to see how Cheryl's influence sparks something within Walter Mitty.  Every thought of her ignites the embers of his hopes and dreams into a miraculous blazing reality. He starts to become who he has always wanted to become.  It's a side of him that has always been there but just locked away, lying dormant until awakened by purpose, by hope.  That's the power of love.

"Somewhere in your make-up (perhaps in the cells of your brain) there lies sleeping, the seed of achievement which, if aroused and put into action, would carry you to heights, such as you may never have hoped to attain." Once this "genius which lies asleep" is awakened by love, it will "drive you upward to whatever goal you may wish to achieve."  -Napoleon Hill

"Love is, without question, life's greatest experience.  It brings one into communion with Infinite Intelligence." - Napoleon Hill

Nothing could be more true!!  I believe this is why God is so powerful, because He is love personified.

"Friendship is a spiritual thing.  It is independent of matter, or space or time.  That which I love in my friend is not that which I see.  What influences me in my friend is not his body but his spirit.  He influences me about as much in his absence as in his presence."
- Henry Drummond

There's a quote I discovered  just over 20 years ago and I've never forgotten it. I believe it is a key that unlocks the heart in a way that is vibrant, full, and rich, brimming over with meaning...

"Live to learn, learn to love, and you'll love to live." - Matthew Cowley

There's a rhythm in rush these days
Where the lights don't move and the colors don't fade
Leaves you empty with nothing but dreams
In a world gone shallow
In a world gone lean

Sometimes there's things a man cannot know
Gears won't turn and the leaves won't grow
There's no place to run and no gasoline
Engine won't turn
And the train won't leave

Engines won't turn and the train won't leave

I will stay with you tonight
Hold you close 'til the morning light
In the morning watch a new day rise
We'll do whatever just to stay alive
We'll do whatever just to stay alive

Well the way I feel is the way I write
It isn't like the thoughts of the man who lies
There is a truth and it's on our side
Dawn is coming
Open your eyes
Look into the sun as the new days rise

And I will wait for you tonight
You're here forever and you're by my side
I've been waiting all my life
To feel your heart as it's keeping time
We'll do whatever just to stay alive

Dawn is coming
Open your eyes
Dawn is coming
Open your eyes
Dawn is coming
Open your eyes
Dawn is coming
Open your eyes

Look into the sun as the new days rise
There's a rhythm in rush these days
Where the lights don't move and the colors don't fade
Leaves you empty with nothing but dreams
In a world gone shallow
In a world gone lean

But there is a truth and it's on our side
Dawn is coming open your eyes
Look into the sun as a new days rise

What good are words... if we don't MOVE?!

Everyone has their opinion of what makes great music.  My favorite is the kind that not only gets me moving but points me in the right direction.  I absolutely love the feeling of discovering a new song to add to my list.  I really like this one not just because it makes me want to "bust-a-move" but because I can relate.

When I share my testimony, when I write, when I pray, when I give praise to another...  it will all be nothing more than words if I don't show it through what I do.  It is all in vain if it doesn't come from my heart.  It's so easy to "talk the talk."  But if I'm not practicing what I preach, "What good are words?"  I want to be the one who walks the walk!
It's time to move my feet, baby!

Make a Move
by, Royal Tailor

Mr., good intentions,
So much I wanna do.
My mouth just keeps on running,
But I never follow through.

I heard that true religion,
Is love with hands and feet.
I wanna find my own way,
To reach a world in need.

I've been, captured by the unimportant.
Locked in, and now it's time to break free

There's more to life,
Open my eyes.
Someone is needing You.
So I gotta Make A Move.

What good are words,
When this world hurts.
Real faith will come through.
When I Make A Move.

We don't need permission,
To go outside of these doors.
And dream some crazy dream,
No one else has dreamed before.

To show love and compassion.
Where ever way it may be.
To put faith into action,
Do more than just believe.

We are,
Hope to those who have been broken.
We were,
Made to make a difference, Made to make a difference.

There's more to life,
Open my eyes.
Someone is needing You.
So I gotta Make A Move.

What good are words,
When this world hurts.
Real faith will come through.
When I Make A Move.

"Ask in Faith" - Ensign, May 2008, 94-97 - David A. Bednar
"True faith is focused in and on the Lord Jesus Christ and always leads to righteous action. The Prophet Joseph Smith taught that “faith [is] the first principle in revealed religion, and the foundation of all righteousness” and that it is also “the principle of action in all intelligent beings” (Lectures on Faith [1985], 1). Action alone is not faith in the Savior, but acting in accordance with correct principles is a central component of faith. Thus, “faith without works is dead” (James 2:20).

The Prophet Joseph further explained that “faith is not only the principle of action, but of power also, in all intelligent beings, whether in heaven or on earth” (Lectures on Faith, 3). Thus, faith in Christ leads to righteous action, which increases our spiritual capacity and power. Understanding that faith is a principle of action and of power inspires us to exercise our moral agency in compliance with gospel truth, invites the redeeming and strengthening powers of the Savior’s Atonement into our lives, and enlarges the power within us whereby we are agents unto ourselves (see D&C 58:28)." - "Ask in Faith" - Ensign, May 2008, 94-97 - David A. Puzzle Piece Perspective

My dad used to always counsel me, "You can't see the forest for the trees."  As a young teenager, I didn't understand what he meant by that.  Of course, it's obvious to me now, he meant I lacked perspective.

I don't know how much I cared whether or not I had correct perspective back then, but now I hunger and thirst for it... I pray for it! I desire with all my heart to see clearly.  I want to see with the Spirit and not with my own eyes. - Jacob 4:13

I'm so thankful for prayer.  What an amazing listener our Father in Heaven is, I have so much to learn about that wonderful quality!  Prayer is my healing balm, my lifeline, my connection to my Truest Friend.  (Some may speculate in the ability to communicate with heaven but I've had too many experiences in my life that confirm the validity of prayer and I cannot deny it.)  My questions need answers, my soul needs direction, my hurt needs healing, my eyes need vision, my heart needs changing, and I know He is mighty to bless me with all of this and more.

The Savior taught: “Whatsoever ye shall ask the Father in my name, which is right, believing that ye shall receive, behold it shall be given unto you” (3 Ne. 18:20). “Pray always, and I will pour out my Spirit upon you, and great shall be your blessing” (D&C 19:38).

The Apostle James encourages, “The … fervent prayer of a righteous [person] availeth much” (James 5:16).

What does fervent mean?  It means intense, sincere, impassioned, and heartfelt.  Have you had prayers like that, so intense that you feel as if the very flesh of your heart is being torn? I have.  It may not sound pleasant to some but I honestly cherish such moments in prayer only because I know I'm in the safest possible place to be so raw and exposed.

In the scriptures we are commanded to "pray always." How is this done? Alma 34:27 teaches us to keep our prayers in our hearts, “When you do not cry unto the Lord, let your hearts be full, drawn out in prayer unto him continually for your welfare, and also for the welfare of those who are around you.”

Prayer is the key that unlocks the door of revelation.

President Boyd K. Packer counseled, "Learn to pray. Pray often. Pray in your mind, in your heart. Pray on your knees. Prayer is your personal key to heaven. The lock is on your side of the veil. And I have learned to conclude all my prayers with 'Thy will be done'" (Matthew 6:10; see also Luke 11:2; 3 Nephi 13:10).

In direct answer to my prayers yesterday, I was led straight to a talk from conference all about perspective.  Interesting that my Heavenly Father would give me the same counsel my earthly father gave me so many years ago.  I guess I still have a lot of growing up to do.

The story of my life is like a gigantic jigsaw puzzle.  Through prayer I have laid all the pieces across the table.  I graciously thank my loving Father in Heaven for the exciting opportunity of putting together this picture of my life with Him.  He watches over me and gives me help as I ask.  There's an amazing sense of satisfaction when I find pieces that snap perfectly into place, knowing just how and why they relate, revealing more of the bigger picture.

Then I have this group of other pieces; I know they are part of the puzzle, I've held them, examined them closely, and searched for their appropriate position.  I can see the colors and style of cut match with the overall puzzle. I know they belong in the big picture somehow, so I hang on to them. Sometimes I gaze at them for hours...  for the life of me, I cannot see how they can even be possible. I want to find their place!  Like a child, I grow frustrated and discouraged and cry out to my Father, "I don't want to deal with these pieces anymore! I don't know where they belong!"
He lovingly tells me, "Then don't try to make them fit right now, Alicia, and don't quit or throw these ones away either.   Keep putting together the pieces you do understand and one by one, over time, you will see exactly how these other ones belong in your life and you will know right where they go. Be patient."
This brought me comfort.  I pray for patience.

In this same talk Elder Rafael E. Pino shares a story about the raw marble and how the sculptor sees the finished piece:
"As the sculptor was chiseling a block of marble, a boy came every day and watched shyly. When the figure of David emerged and appeared from that stone, complete for all the world to admire, the boy asked Michelangelo, ‘How did you know he was in there?"

This was also what I needed to hear and caused me to recall the lyrics to my Masterpiece, the song I played over and over and memorized into my heart so many years ago.

I love how personal my Father in Heaven is.  I love and cherish the power of prayer.  I thank Him for His devotion to such an impatient soul.  He gently guides and lovingly listens.  He has provided me with His words through scripture, through His servants, and through the Spirit of revelation.  What an invaluable truth!

Please don't run away!

As young women leaders in my church we have felt impressed to speak to the girls about the law of chastity.  It's a delicate subject to address, mainly because of misunderstanding the "why" of the law and "what" to do if it is broken.

I think my biggest anxiety in lessons like these are for those youth who have been raised in the gospel, taught their whole life what to avoid, what to do and not to do, and who have at one time or another found themselves in a vulnerable situation and gave in.  How difficult must it be for them to hear the seriousness of breaking the law of chastity?  Do they feel like a lost cause, that there is no more hope for them?  Do they feel that they've ruined the story of their life?  Do such lessons make them want to hide, to disappear from spiritual things, from the presence of God, or from those who speak in His name?  I certainly hope not.  I hope and pray in those situations that those youth have had firm foundational teachings in Christ, His redemption, and power to make things right again, to make them completely whole, as if it NEVER happened.

When Adam partook of the forbidden fruit he was ashamed and hid himself.  He desperately tried to cover his own nakedness by retreating into the darkness where he "couldn't be seen" by others or himself.  He ran away from the light which so painfully reminded him of the choice he had made.  How many of God's precious children do the same?  I have witnessed this for myself among people I love very dearly.  When they mess up, they give up.  They feel they've lost their worth.  But it's not true, they are still worth more than gold.  If they could only see.  I want to run and call after them, "Please don't go, all is not lost, there is hope... please whatever you do, don't disappear!"

That's essentially what our Father in Heaven did for Adam and Eve.  He called after them, He forgave them, and provided clothing for them so they didn't have to be ashamed of their nakedness anymore, so they could come out freely into the light and out of hiding.  The atonement of Jesus Christ not only clothes our nakedness but prepares us for the finest clothing.  He wants to adorn us like a bride for her groom.  I feel such reverence for this sacred truth! He pleads for us to "come unto Him."

Christ is all about healing, He's all about hope... He is all about love.

I cherish the following scriptures:

"And it came to pass, when he was in a certain city, behold a man full of leprosy: who seeing Jesus fell on his face, and besought him, saying, Lord, if thou wilt, thou canst make me clean.
And he put forth his hand, and touched him, saying, I will: be thou clean. And immediately the leprosy departed from him." - Luke 5:12-13

"And my soul hungered; and I kneeled down before my Maker, and I cried unto him in mighty prayer and supplication for mine own soul; and all the day long did I cry unto him; yea, and when the night came I did still raise my voice high that it reached the heavens.
And there came a voice unto me, saying: Enos, thy sins are forgiven thee, and thou shalt be blessed.
And I, Enos, knew that God could not lie; wherefore, my guilt was swept away.
And I said: Lord, how is it done?" - Enos 1:4-7

"When Jesus had lifted up himself, and saw none but the woman, he said unto her, Woman, where are those thine accusers? hath no man condemned thee?
She said, No man, Lord. And Jesus said unto her, Neither do I condemn thee: go, and sin no more." - John 8:10-11

This is the character of Christ.  I don't comprehend how it is all done.  But I know that there is nothing I could ever say or do that He can't fix. I know there is nothing  that would end His love for me... which makes me adore and reverence Him even more. He has provided a way back, a way for healing, and for wholeness.

I pray for the youth.  I hope they understand this.  I hope they understand their great and infinite worth.  If they have messed up, I pray they won't hide.  And I hope the only running they do is in the direction of the Savior.

Because of Him, we can start brand new... this is the first day of the rest of our lives.  Do we believe it?  Do we believe it not just for ourselves but for all of our brothers and sisters?  I do.  With all my heart, I do.

"By the Power of His Word" - Spiritual Creation

As a family, we just finished reading Jacob chapter 4.  I love the verse where it says, "For behold, by the power of his word man came upon the face of the earth, which earth was created by the power of his word" - Jacob 4:9

What I love is this part... "created by the power of his word."  I believe this is another way of saying that they were "spiritually created first".

  • God created all things spiritually before they were naturally upon the face of the earth (see Moses 3chapter heading; Moses 3:5–7; see also D&C 29:31–32; Abraham 3:22–23).
  • To be created “spiritually” appears to have at least two meanings: to be planned in advance, and to be formed as a living being with individual identity and a spirit body (see Moses 3:5–7; see also Moses 3:19;6:51).

  • This fascinates me...  if we are to "become even as He is" then I believe God wants us to learn for ourselves not just the power of "His word" but the power of our own words when righteously used.

    Creation Through Prayer
Our words = what we speak in heartfelt prayer, our desires, our hopes, our dreams, gratitude spoken, praises, prayers on behalf of others, etc.
His words = Personal revelation, spiritual enlightenment, whisperings of the Spirit

    Creation Through Scripture Study
Our words = the notes we take, sharing what we've learned through testimony,
His words = scriptures we ponder upon and allow to change our hearts, ancient and modern prophets, promises that give us hope, understanding of who we are and what God expects of us

    Creation Through Covenants
Our words = keeping the promises we make "our word becomes our bond." We become persons of integrity
His words = "I the Lord am bound when ye do what I say" - God is a promise keeper.  We can trust that with full confidence.

    .............
Even if a person does not believe in God they cannot help but acknowledge "the power of words" for good or for evil.  Our communication: what we speak, what we write, what others speak, what they write, how they listen and how we listen is very powerful!  This is where creation begins! The words we choose to use among our brothers and sisters on this earth create things spiritually first and then form into something physical.  The examples are everywhere around us.

It causes me to wonder... What are we "creating" with our words?
"Everyone plays a piece"... lets make it "glorious".

    A Wise Investment

One of the biggest lies and falsehoods ever told to man is that you can buy anything in this world with money. But pure love is far richer than pure gold and it cannot be bought, neither can it be sold.  Pure love, like precious metals, can be discovered and refined on this earth but not exchanged from hand to hand only from heart to heart.  The wise understand the value of this commodity, because the purest love brings the purest joy.  It is not found in the stock market but in the investing, the exchanging, and the returning of Eternal bonds among our brothers and sisters, our mothers and fathers, our children and grandchildren. The truth is, if you spend your life chasing things that only money can buy: fashion, popularity, pleasures, and praise...  you will not only come up empty handed in the end, but empty hearted.

The purest love = sacrifice, especially that of one's self

    -Alicia

"A selfless person is one who is more concerned about the happiness and well-being of another than about his or her own convenience or comfort, one who is willing to serve another when it is neither sought for nor appreciated, or one who is willing to serve even those whom he or she dislikes. A selfless person displays a willingness to sacrifice, a willingness to purge from his or her mind and heart personal wants, and needs, and feelings. Instead of reaching for and requiring praise and recognition for himself, or gratification of his or her own wants, the selfless person will meet these very human needs for others. Remember the words of the Savior as he taught his disciples on an occasion when personal recognition was being sought: “But Jesus called them to him, and saith unto them, … whosoever will be great among you, shall be your minister: And whosoever of you will be the chiefest, shall be servant of all. For even the son of man came not to be ministered unto, but to minister, and to give his life a ransom for many.” (Mark 10:42–45.)

    Ministering in the Lord's Way

We're not meant to walk the road of life alone.  I'm eternally grateful for those who have shined their light and helped me get through some of my darkest nights. :)

"Pure religion and undefiled before God and the Father is this, To visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction, and to keep himself unspotted from the world." - James 1:27

“Wherefore, be faithful; stand in the office which I have appointed unto you; succor the weak, lift up the hands which hang down, and strengthen the feeble knees.” D&C 81:5

"It would seem that no one escapes some uncertainty, insecurity, doubt, and even fear. This mortal existence is invariably challenging and unpredictable. An honest person who is acquainted with the characteristics of life cannot ever be completely confident that his circumstances will not change unexpectedly.

How do we deal with the inevitable moments of fear or “feeble knees”? It is vital that we not face them alone. Always it is helpful and comforting to be able to confide in a loving and trusted friend or relative who empathetically listens to our uncertainties. We often find that our confidant has experienced similar fears, and we may even share in his wise counsel.

Life is never easy, and we cannot escape our own case of feeble knees from time to time. It is thus essential that we love and support one another." - Marvin J. Ashton

Ramblers in the wilderness we can’t find what we need
Get a little restless from the searching
Get a little worn down in between
Like a bull chasing the matador is the man left to his own schemes
Everybody needs someone beside em’ shining like a lighthouse from the sea

Brother let me be your shelter
I’ll never leave you all alone
I can be the one you call
    When you’re low
Brother let me be your fortress
When the night winds are driving on
Be the one to light the way
    Bring you home

Face down in the desert now there’s a cage locked around my heart
I found a way to drop the keys where my failures were
Now my hands can’t reach that far
I ain’t made for a rivalry I could never take the world alone
I know that in my weakness I am strong, but
It’s your love that brings me home

Brother let me be your shelter
I’ll never leave you all alone
I can be the one you call
    When you’re low
Brother let me be your fortress
When the night winds are driving on
Be the one to light the way
    Bring you home

And when you call and need me near
    Sayin' where'd you go?
    Brother I'm right here
And on those days when the sky begins to fall
You're the blood of my blood
We can get through it all

Brother let me be your shelter
I’ll never leave you all alone
I can be the one you call
    When you’re feelin' low
Brother let me be your fortress
When the night winds are driving on
Be the one to light the way
    Bring you home

    Learning CharACTer

When working through difficulties or particular challenges, how often have we heard the phrase, "This will be good for you, it builds character."

    What is character?

It is the sum of the soul.  It is the qualities and attributes that make up one's personality, who they truly are. It is character that determines destiny, NOT appearances, prestige, popularity, or circumstance.

How is character reveled within each of us?  Martin Luther King taught, "The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy."

In Lectures on Faith, Joseph Smith described that one of the three things "necessary in order that any rational and intelligent being may exercise faith in [the Father and Son] unto life and salvation is a correct idea of [Their] character, perfections, and attributes:" (page 33)

How do we gain a correct idea of the character of Christ?  We observe and study His life and His teachings... but there's more to learning than just studying, it must also be by faith. - D&C 109:7

"Faith is a principle of action... Faith in Jesus Christ is the first principle of the gospel and is more than belief, since true faith always moves its possessor to some kind of physical and mental action."
     -Bible Dictionary

There's an old saying that you never truly understand a person until you've walked a mile in their shoes.  In order to understand the character of Christ, we must "walk a mile" in His shoes, we must try to be like Him in whatever circumstances.  Learning to walk in the footsteps of the Savior doesn't happen overnight.  The Lord is patient with us just as a father is patient with his children when they attempt to take their first steps.  Every time they stumble, he encourages them to keep trying and his heart is overjoyed with every success.  It requires constant effort and God is proud of all who are sincerely and genuinely doing their best.

Learning the character of Christ requires acting out what we learn.  And in order to "act" out what we have learned from our great Teacher, we must be given circumstances that test us and try us.  Because of this knowledge, I am grateful for the challenges that confront me.  Challenges are opportunities for me to exercise my agency, to practice in faith/action what I have learned by study.

Learning the CharACTer of Christ comes from acting as He would act, from practicing over and over what He would do.

I am genuinely grateful for a loving Father in Heaven who is incredibly patient with me.  He doesn't scorn me when I stumble but sees it as a "good fall" because he sees my heart, He sees I'm trying.  The faith He places in me stirs within my soul a greater love and admiration for His character, I have a greater desire to become as He is.  So I'll keep learning, keep practicing, keep trying, and through His amazing grace, I won't just walk, I'll run!

"Live your life to be a good example of what you believe—in word and deed. How we live our religion is far more important than what we may say about our religion.

Our Savior’s Second Coming is drawing nearer. Let us not delay in this great cause. Remember Captain Moroni, who hoisted the title of liberty inscribed with the words “In memory of our God, our religion, and freedom, and our peace, our wives, and our children.”  Let us remember the people’s response: exercising their agency, they “came running together” with a covenant to act.

My beloved brothers and sisters, don’t walk! Run! Run to receive the blessings of agency by following the Holy Ghost and exercising the freedoms God has given us to do His will."

One thing I really love about this video is it's not just a loving father who encourages but also loving brothers and sisters.  How thankful I am for my brothers and sisters in the Gospel who cheer and inspire me every step of the way. Oh how I love them!

    By the Spirit of Revelation

(This talk never grows old to me.    Sometimes I doubt that which I felt was revelation... not because I doubt God.... but because I doubt myself.  I am aware of my weaknesses and it's easy to feel after receiving a very clear answer through fasting and prayer that it was all in my head.  I truly need this encouragement as I continue to seek revelation in my life.  These are the parts of Elder Holland's talk that encouraged me most today.)
    .............

"I... believe that the adversary and his pinched, calculating little minions try to oppose [our revelation] experiences and then try to darken them after they happen. But that is not the way of the gospel. That is not the way of a Latter-day Saint who claims as the fundamental fact of the Restoration the spirit of revelation. Fighting through darkness and despair and pleading for the light is what opened this dispensation. It is what keeps it going, and it is what will keep you going. With Paul, I say to all of you:

“Cast not away therefore your confidence, which hath great recompence of reward.  For ye have need of patience, that, after ye have done the will of God, ye might receive the promise.”

"With any major decision there are cautions and considerations to make, but once there has been illumination, beware the temptation to retreat from a good thing. If it was right when you prayed about it and trusted it and lived for it, it is right now."

"Like Moses in that vision, there may come after the fact some competing doubts and confusion, but it will pale when you measure it against the real thing. Remember the real thing. Remember how urgently you have needed help in earlier times and you got it. The Red Sea will open to the honest seeker of revelation."

"Oliver Cowdery, who missed the opportunity of a lifetime because he didn’t seize it in the lifetime of the opportunity, the Lord said, “You did not continue as you commenced.” Does that sound familiar to those who have been illuminated and then knuckled under to second thoughts and returning doubts?"

"After you have gotten the message, after you have paid the price to feel His love and hear the word of the Lord, go forward."

"If God has told you something is right, if something is indeed true for you, He will provide the way for you to accomplish it."

The Greatest of These is Love

"It don't take money and it don't take fame
don't need no credit card to ride this train
Tougher than diamonds and stronger than steel
you won't feel nothin' till you feel
you feel the power, just the power of love
    that's the power of love"

    - Huey Lewis & The News

Well there you have it ladies and gentlemen, one of the most profound truths embedded within the movie score of a 1980's teenage-time-travel saga.  Who knew?  This song is definitely a hit in my book but I doubt Brother Lewis and his news crew intended to make any Bible references when they wrote it. So, I'll help them out with that.  ;)

Amazingly enough, what most of the world describes as the "power of love" is just a drop in the ocean.  It hardly scratches the surface, especially when we are talking about God's love.  President Uctdorf said, "Think of the purest, most all-consuming love you can imagine. Now multiply that love by an infinite amount—that is the measure of God’s love for you."

Such love is hard for me to fathom because the "purest, most all-consuming" kind I have experienced in my life is already breathtaking and overwhelming. I am certain that I would not be able to stand in Christ's presence were I to see Him today.  I do not doubt that being near Him, I would lose all physical strength within me and I would fall at His feet, His beautiful feet.  Perhaps that is why the people in Lehi's dream "fell down" when they partook of the fruit of the Tree of Life.

Associated directly with this love is "joy" as the angel describes to Nephi, "Behold the Lamb of God, yea, even the Son of the Eternal Father! .. it is the love of God, which sheddeth itself abroad in the hearts of the children of men; wherefore, it is the most desirable above all things... Yea, and the most joyous to the soul." - 1 Nephi 11:22-23

When I think of joy, I think of the sun and the warmth of its rays on my face.  You know that feeling when you are out in the fresh open air, when the light of the morning breaks over the horizon... You cannot help but close your eyes and soak in every stream of warmth and radiance. There flows in you a sensation of new energy and that energy fills every part of your being.  It puts a spring in your step, an excitement for life, and you begin to feel that light of the sun bursting through you.  It's incredible!

We do not keep these glimpses of Heaven to ourselves.  They are meant to be shared.  When we come to understand "the power of God's love" so deep that it changes our heart, our very nature, there does not need to be any command to share it because it will happen so naturally.  We cannot restrain ourselves from doing this because it is in "the sharing" that the joy becomes magnified and infinitely limitless.  In return we feel a greater measure of His love and thus it propels us to grow "brighter and brighter until the perfect day."

Yes, "What the world needs now, is love, sweet love... it's the only thing that there's much too little of."  But Jackie DeShannon, I don't think there's "much too little" of it, I just think most people don't know where to find it.  And how do we help them find it?  We feast on the sweet Gospel of Jesus Christ.  Here pure love infuses joy, and pure joy creates light... enabling us to SHINE!  This is how we help others discover it... Shine so everyone can see what they so desperately need, shine so they can find the Tree for themselves and partake. There is plenty to go around.

In the entire world there is nothing that is greater. Yet one of the biggest lies ever told is that "you can buy anything in this world with money."  I refute that lie with this truth: Love "don't take money, it don't take fame, don't need no credit card to ride this train."  And Mr. Lewis...It's not that it "might just save your life", it IS LIFE and it's the ONLY way to save ours.  It has saved mine.

"Love.. ought to be at the center of all and everything we do in our own family, in our Church callings, and in our livelihood. Love is the healing balm that repairs rifts in personal and family relationships. It is the bond that unites families, communities, and nations. Love is the power that initiates friendship, tolerance, civility, and respect. It is the source that overcomes divisiveness and hate. Love is the fire that warms our lives with unparalleled joy and divine hope. Love should be our walk and our talk.

When we truly understand what it means to love as Jesus Christ loves us, the confusion clears and our priorities align. Our walk as disciples of Christ becomes more joyful. Our lives take on new meaning. Our relationship with our Heavenly Father becomes more profound. Obedience becomes a joy rather than a burden." - Dieter F. Uchtdorf "The Love of God"

    Grateful for Grace

I'll be the first to admit I am among the weakest of the weak.  I don't say this to belittle myself, I just say it as a fact... the Lord knows it.  I love this series of books I've been reading by David A. Bednar.  He speaks a lot about the enabling power of Grace.  I have a testimony of God's love and grace for me.  I am even grateful that I have weaknesses, that I have difficult times, and desperate pleas that bring me to my knees.  It is in these moments I dig deeper into my faith, I depend more on my Savior, and strive harder to anchor my heart to Him.  He has never failed me, never left my side, He is my truest Friend.

"I know that I am nothing; as to my strength I am weak; therefore I will not boast of myself, but I will boast of my God, for in his strength I can do all things; yea, behold, many mighty miracles we have wrought in this land, for which we will praise his name forever." - Alma 26:12

    Feeling Grace

"Warm rays of sunlight stream down upon me and dance across my face.

Darkness is dispelled as the morning breaks.

I breathe in the crisp refreshing air that follows a summer rain.

    I smile.

    I breathe deep again.
I feel blessed, I feel free.

    I am home.

    A new day has arrived,
    I am rested and renewed.

    Hope is alive,
    It pulses through my veins.

    There is nothing I fear,
    I am safe here.

    And it's only the beginning..."

    Your Grace Finds Me

It’s there in the newborn cry
There in the light of every sunrise
There in the shadows of this life
    Your great grace

It’s there on the mountain top
There in the everyday and the mundane
There in the sorrow and the dancing
    Your great grace
    Oh such grace

It’s there on a wedding day
There in the weeping by the graveside
There in the very breath we breathe
    Your great grace

The same for the rich and poor
The same for the saint and for the sinner
Enough for this whole wide world
    Your great grace
    Oh such grace

There in the darkest night of the soul
There in the sweetest songs of victory
    Your grace finds me
    Yes your grace finds me

So I’m breathing in Your grace
    And breathing out Your praise
    I’m breathing in Your grace
    Forever I’ll be
    Breathing in Your grace
    And breathing out Your praise

    Your grace finds me
    Yes Your grace finds me

    Spiritual Awareness

I just finished reading the story of Alma and his bretheren. As I reflect back on these chapters I think of  Alma 17:2-3. I love the description of what united these friends in the Lord so deeply, "they had waxed strong in the knowledge of the truth; for they were men of a sound understanding and they had searched the scriptures diligently, that they might know the word of God.  But this is not all; they had given themselves to much prayer, and fasting; therefore they had the spirit of prophecy, and the spirit of revelation, and when they taught, they taught with power and authority of God."

    1. They came to know truth and also understood it.  This implies they received it with both mind and heart.

    2. They searched the scriptures diligently.  This includes the scripture that we call the "words of the living prophets".  D&C 68:4

    3. They gave themselves to much fasting and much prayer.  Sincere prayer and fasting causes one to wax stronger and stronger in their humility and firmer and firmer in the faith of Christ  - Heleman 3:35

I believe these three steps were so interwoven into the hearts of these young men that they didn't have to remind themselves to do any of them.  Doing such was not a duty but a privilege, it was their sincere desire and they delighted in it!  Such habits and attitudes among them created a strong "spiritual awareness."  Regularly applying these things enabled them to have the spirit of revelation, to perceive and foresee that which is unseen by the natural man. And when they taught, it was more than words because "they taught with power and authority of God."

In the various roles I play in life, mother, sister, wife, friend, teacher, student, etc. many things clamor for my time and attention.  It can be difficult to find balance or to know exactly where best to spend my energy.  I tell my children that my love is never divided among them, only multiplied.  But because we live in a sphere governed by minutes and hours, my time is divided among them.... So I pray for wisdom in how I use it.

I don't always know from day to day how I'm going to accomplish everything that requires my time and attention.  I just know that if I stick to these three basic things that Alma and his friends did, the Spirit will give me an awareness of that which matters most.  And usually those things which matters most are NOT the things that obtrusively ring in my ear.  Rather it is the quiet whisper that says, "Stop what you are doing for five minutes Alicia and just attentively listen to your child."  It's that nudge that says, "Walk to your next appointment instead of drive this time."  Or maybe the Spirit says "put down all your dinner preparations and greet your husband when he arrives home from work, just hug him for three or four uninterrupted minutes."

I really think in today's complicated world we underestimate "the small and simple things."  I don't know if it's balance we need so much of, as if God expects us to juggle everything thrown at us like circus performers.  I believe it's wisdom we need more of, more spiritual awareness to guide us to those things that matter most.  Ezra Taft Benson taught this wonderful truth, “When we put God first, all other things fall into their proper place or drop out of our lives. Our love of the Lord will govern the claims for our affection, the demands on our time, the interests we pursue, and the order of our priorities.”

"Never let a problem to be solved become more important than a person to be loved." - Thomas S. Monson

"Let them be for signs, and for seasons"

"And I, God, said: Let there be lights in the firmament of the heaven, to divide the day from the night, and let them be for signs, and for seasons, and for days, and for years" - Moses 2:14

If we are "not watching" we may begin to deny the existence of God.  We may begin to doubt in His power, promises, and His love.
"And if that servant is not found watching, he will say in his heart, My Lord delayeth his coming" JST Luke 12:54

It is interesting that in these last days, during these "signs and seasons" the night sky is often veiled to us and it seems as if the "lights in the heavens" have gone out.  But on the other hand, we also live in a time where with the right tools we can actually see the stars better than any other people who have lived on the earth ever could.

Several weeks ago, we had the opportunity to pull out my husband's telescope with some friends of ours.  We could see Venus, Mars, and the cloud bands on Jupiter as well as its moons.  We saw The Orion Nebula and The Seven Sisters.  We could also see the craters of our own moon with enough clarity that you could see the shadows they cast and their depth.  It was AMAZING!

I love that we have this "parable in the sky".
We might ask ourselves? "What are two main things that prevent us from seeing the stars on a dark clear night?"  I propose that they are the same things that prevent us from seeing the "signs and seasons" the "glory of God" in these last days.

    Pollution and Man-made Lights

    1. Pollution- "Yea, it shall come in a day when there shall be great pollutions upon the face of the earth; there shall be murders, and robbing, and lying, and deceivings, and whoredoms, and all manner of abominations; when there shall be many who will say, Do this, or do that, and it mattereth not, for the Lord will uphold such at the last day. But wo unto such, for they are in the gall of bitterness and in the bonds of iniquity." - Mormon 8:31

    2. Man-made lights-  "He commandeth that there shall be no priestcrafts; for, behold, priestcrafts are that men preach and set themselves up for a light unto the world, that they may get gain and praise of the world; but they seek not the welfare of Zion. - 2 Nephi 26:29

If these two things prevent us from seeing the stars, the signs in the heavens, and the glory of God, is it possible that these two things might also prevent us from seeing the worth and beauty in others?  How do we have the "eyes to see" what are the "tools" we are given?

Tools to See the "Stars" Clearly

Tool #1 The Spirit - "The spirit sees things as they really are and as they really will be." - Jacob 4:13   If it is by the Spirit that we come to know God, shouldn't that be the same means by which we come to know one another?  I believe that when we earnestly seek the Spirit we will find God everywhere!

Tool #2 The Word of God - In Lehi's vision of the Tree of Life, it was the word of God "the iron rod" that led them to the fruit.  It guides individuals through the darkness, the confusion and lies.
    -1 Nephi 15:23-24

Tool #3 Prayer and Fasting - This is the door to heaven.  "I wonder if we can ever really fathom the immense power of prayer until we encounter an overpowering, urgent problem and realize that we are powerless to resolve it. Then we will turn to our Father in humble recognition of our total dependence on Him. It helps to find a secluded place where our feelings can be vocally expressed as long and as intensely as necessary." - Richard G. Scott
Fasting helps us have a vision outside ourselves, we offer up a sacrifice to show how much we care and what we are willing to suffer on another's behalf.  I believe that a person who cherishes and keeps the law of the fast, understands more fully the love of our Savior.

Tool #4 Covenants - If prayer and fasting are the doorway to heaven then I believe that making and keeping sacred covenants are what holds that door open.  When we are serious about our covenants, when we honor them in word and deed, it is a demonstration of our love, testimony, and devotion to God and our fellow man. And because covenants go two ways, we can rest assure that the promises from our Father in Heaven are solid.  They give us hope and reason to press on, "they produce the faith necessary to persevere and to do all things that are expedient in the Lord. Our willingness to take upon us the name of Christ and keep His commandments requires a degree of faith, but as we honor our covenants, that faith expands. In the first place, the promised fruits of obedience become evident, which confirms our faith. Secondly, the Spirit communicates God’s pleasure, and we feel secure in His continued blessing and help. Thirdly, come what may, we can face life with hope and equanimity, knowing that we will succeed in the end because we have God’s promise to us individually, by name, and we know He cannot lie" - D. Todd Christofferson (see Enos 1:6; Ether 3:12).

    "The Lord Shall Guide Thee"

I believe God wants to reveal Himself to us, He wants the veil to be lifted and our eyes to be opened, to see the glory of His kingdom, the signs and wonders that sing out His name.  Prove Him through prayer, fasting, scriptures, and covenants and He will "open the windows of heaven" and the "stars will shine brighter than ever before", His spirit will be so abundant in your life that you'll be overwhelmed with "not room enough to receive it".

"In every part and portion of the revelations of God as given to the children of men, or to any individual in heaven or on earth, to understand them properly, a man needs the Spirit by which they were given—the Spirit that reveals such matters to the understanding, and makes them familiar to the mind.. ...we should all live so that the Spirit of revelation could dictate and write on the heart and tell us what we should do" - Brigham Young

    Self-Esteem vrs Christ-Esteem

Have you ever been around a person who struggles to rejoice in the successes of others, a person wherewith they often envy instead of encourage, resent instead of regard?  They feed themselves with the falsehood that when they praise or build another, their worth somehow diminishes in the process.  The irony of this malady is that in most cases their lack of esteem for others is more a reflection of an unhealthy esteem for themselves.  Whether this unhealthy esteem stems from lack of confidence or overconfidence, it doesn't really matter, they both create a vacuum.  Either extreme, conceit or cowardliness, both are self-centered and both come from the "fear of man".  And where there is fear there can be no real love because "perfect love casteth out all fear".

During a particular exciting moment in my life, a time when I had achieved a goal I never thought I could attain, a close friend of mine confessed to me, "I want to be happy for you Alicia but I'm sorry, I can't... I just can't. I hope you understand."  This friend of mine struggles with depression and I understood.  "It's alright", I answered.  "I know you want to be happy for me.  I'm sure it's depression speaking."  It must be hard for a person to rejoice in the accomplishments of others when they don't feel accomplished themselves or to believe in others when they don't believe in themselves.

Even so, it was still painful to hear and the temptation to grow bitter stung my heart.  I had supported my friend tirelessly though countless numbers of their goals and achievements.  I praised and cheered for them all along their way and yet at that moment, I felt absolutely no support in return.

I suppose I could have responded back that I "deserve" better.  But I have learned that when I get caught up in all that "I deserve" I too become trapped in the vacuum of self.  In truth, I don't "deserve" anything!  I came into this world with absolutely nothing, so the smallest things are blessings, even the tiniest bits of encouragement.

Gratefully, I don't suffer with clinical depression.  Of course, I've had "down days" but the concept of feeling no hope or a numbness to Divine love is completely foreign to me.  So, I cannot judge fairly nor do I understand fully the struggle with apathy my friend endures.  However, the Savior comprehends all things.  He can bless me with the compassion that I seek.

I admit that I am terribly far from perfect.  I don't esteem myself as anyone great or praiseworthy.  In fact, I'm pretty ordinary, if you ask me... but that's the beauty of it.  That's what makes me love my Savior even more, the fact that He loves flawed and ordinary me.
"I marvel that he would descend from his throne divine
To rescue a soul so rebellious and proud as mine,
That he should extend his great love unto such as I,
Sufficient to own, to redeem, and to justify.
Oh, it is wonderful that he should care for me
    Enough to die for me!
Oh, it is wonderful, wonderful to me!"

I appreciated the question Elder Ringwood of the Seventy posed this last conference,
"In our pursuit of me and mine, Have we forgotten Thee and Thine?"

I believe what we need more of is Christ-esteem not self-esteem, more Christ-confidence not self-confidence.  You see, the problem with the equation is the focus on "self".  Christ teaches that when we lose ourselves, for His sake, we will find ourselves.  When Christ becomes the center of our focus, then and only then are we released from this implosive vacuum.

"Instead of allowing yourself to be unhappy, just let your love grow as God wants it to grow. Seek goodness in others. Love more persons more -- love them more impersonally, more unselfishly, without thought of return. The return, never fear, will take care of itself."
    - Henry Drummond
